FAQ Street Tree Planting Program

How does council decide which streets and and suburbs receive trees?

The use of aerial heat and canopy mapping has helped us to identify and prioritise planting locations based on low tree canopy cover, vulnerable areas to heat island effect, in addition to we seizing opportunities to green streets whenever we can by responding to resident requests for street trees

What happens if the tree council planted on my verge is vandalised?

The City of Armadale recognises the value of trees in our streetscapes and the need to protect trees from vandalism and damage. . Sadly, each year, several trees are vandalised across the City.

What you can do to help

Contact the City to report;

  • Any suspicious behaviour around the trees. Earlier warning presents a better chance to catch those responsible and save the tree
  • Observed or have witnessed a tree being damaged intentionally

Please call 9394 5000 to report the damage. Reporting tree vandalism is treated confidentially, acted upon immediately.

By spreading the word to your friends, family, and the larger community on the value of trees, you may help reduce street tree vandalism.

Can I change the tree species planned for planting or opt out entirely?

Tree species are carefully selected for their appropriateness for the conditions, ensuring diversity and continuity in the landscape. Streetscapes with consistent tree species improve property values and create a sense of place. The City assesses site conditions, including soil, exposure, weather, solar panels, and existing infrastructure above and below ground, to ensure healthy development and longevity of the City's Urban Forest.   As such the species for each street are selected and pre ordered each year in set quantities for each species. If you wish to discuss the species selected or have concerns about the planting due to occur, please contact our project officer within the two week period immediately following the date of the letter sent to each homeowner.

What if I want to change the location?

Assessing street tree planting locations involves considering factors like underground services, corner or driveway that may block line of sight, nearby solar panels, and existing vegetation.Trees are typically planted centrally on the verge but we understand that people use the verge for different purposes. Get in touch with our project officer, who is more than willing to work with you to position the tree tin accordance with regulations and to best fit your needs.

Where does Council get the tree from?

The City works with well established, and industry accredited tree producers to ensure species diversity and that only the healthiest and sturdiest specimens are purchased for planting. Bulk tree stock is ordered 9 – 12 months in advance and is often specifically grown for the City. Ad hoc tree stock for our Residents Requests program can be ordered as late as November in anticipation of the planting season the following year.
