Armadale Libraries encourage young bookworms!

The City of Armadale is encouraging children to read more during the summer holidays by joining the Summer Reading Club.

Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones says as part of the school holiday program Fly into the Library the reading challenge is a great way to encourage your child to develop a love of reading.

“Reading can open up new worlds and a variety of different books is important as it exposes children to new vocabulary and develops their literacy skills.

“To participate in the challenge, all you need to do is collect a bookmark from one of our libraries. Then complete your bookmark list by reading five books over summer.

“Once you have completed your bookmark bring it into one of our libraries and show it to a library staff member to collect your reward”, said Mayor Zelones.

The City’s libraries also have lots of fun sessions planned during the January school holidays with a series of activities.

What’s the Joke?

Thursday 8 January, 10 – 11am at Armadale Library
Bestselling interstate children’s author Andy Jones presents a hilarious literacy and music show about jokes and humour. Suitable for children aged five to 12 years.

U Can Hatch Us

Monday 12 to Friday 23 January, Armadale Library during opening hours
The U Can Hatch Us chick hatching program is a great way to watch and gain valuable experience and knowledge about the development of a chicken. All are welcome.

Book Cubby

Monday 12 January, Armadale Library
Tuesday 20 January, Kelmscott Library
Wednesday 28 January, Seville Grove Library
Come and visit the City’s very own Book Cubby and make your own book about birds or flying machines, a copy will be kept on display in the cubby for everyone to read. All are welcome at these sessions, from 2 – 4pm.

Birds of Prey

Thursday 15 January, 1 – 2pm & 2 – 3pm, Armadale Library
This is a great opportunity to come and see nature’s top predators while learning about the environment. There will also be a hands-on display and photo opportunity. Suitable for children aged five years and over.

Lego Encounters

Friday 16 and Wednesday 21 January, 10 – 11am at Kelmscott Library
Come along for a sneak peek of our new Lego encounters club, which will be starting in February. These sessions will have a bird and flying machines theme. Suitable for children aged six to 12 years.

Josephine & Goggles

Friday 23 January, 10 – 11am at Seville Grove Library
Come and meet Josephine and Goggles the Goose. See them perform their musical madness and ‘I am special’ storytelling show. Suitable for children aged two to eight years.

Australia Day Flags

Saturday 24 to Monday 26 January, during opening hours at History House Museum. Over the Australia Day long weekend come and make your own Australian flag to wave at the Australia Day celebrations presented by the City of Armadale.

Winged Creatures

Thursday 29 January, 2 – 3pm at Armadale Library
Have fun learning some art techniques and draw some winged creatures. Suitable for children aged nine to 12 years.

Parents or carers must stay with their child during events. Places are limited and bookings are essential for all events.
