Learn about the requirements for registering, sterilising, and microchipping your animals, along with the allowable number of animals at your property.
The Dog Act 1976 requires all dogs over the age of three (3) months to be microchipped and registered.
The Cat Act 2011 requires all cats over the age of six (6) months of age must be microchipped, sterilised, and registered.
Important notes:
- Registration will not be accepted until your dog/cat is microchipped
- Microchipping exemptions are available from your vet if required
- In the case of cats, registrations will not be accepted until your cat is sterilised
- Complete the Animal registration form
- Ensure you have the following information to include with your form:
- Completed registration form
- Payment (see fees below)
- Proof of concession card holder (if applicable)
- Proof of sterilisation (if applicable)
- Submit the completed form online or send the documents and payment to the City of Armadale:
- In person at the City’s Administration Centre
- By post to the City of Armadale, Locked Bag 2, ARMADALE WA 6992
- By email (payment details cannot be emailed, after the form has been received Ranger Services will contact you to obtain your payment details over the phone).
Please note, pensioner concession card holders receive 50% discount on the following fees.

* Note: Any new 1-year registration made between 1 June and 31 October is subject to 50% off the registration fee. This is due to the registration expiring on 31 October in the same year
Guide dog and assistance dog owners are exempt from paying registration fees. An assistance dog is defined as a dog whose use can alleviate or manage effect of a person’s disability or medical condition. A letter/certificate from one of the following organisations is required:
- Assistance Dogs Australia
- Lions Hearing Dogs
- Seeing Eye Dogs
- Royal Guide Dogs Association or
- VisAbility Limited
If your dog or cat is currently registered at another Council, you can transfer the registration to the City of Armadale at no additional cost. Complete the Animal Registration Form, tick the transfer box, and inform us of the Council you are moving from. Fill out the form as though it were a new registration. After we confirm your previous registration details, we will transfer the registration and mail you a City of Armadale animal tag.
Please complete and submit the relevant form if there have been changes in your animal ownership or if you need to update your animal's registration details (eg change of address or death of the animal).
If you have lost your registration tag or can no longer read the numbers clearly, you can request a replacement free of charge. To request a replacement tag for your dog or cat phone Ranger Services on 9394 5000 or email.
Under the City of Armadale Dog Local Law, the number of dogs allowed on a property depends on the property size:
- Less than 4,000 square metres: maximum of two (2) dogs
- 4,000 to 9,999 square metres: maximum of three (3) dogs
- 10,000 square metres or greater: maximum of four (4) dogs
If you wish to keep more than the prescribed number of dogs, you can apply for an exemption to have up to a maximum of six (6) dogs. All dogs must be registered and microchipped to the property where they will reside. Complete the Application Form to Keep Multiple Dogs and pay the application fee. A Ranger will conduct a property inspection, and the application will be assessed for approval.
Under the City of Armadale Cat Local Law, a maximum of four (4) cats are allowed per property. If you wish to keep more than four (4) cats, you must apply for a permit. All cats must be registered and microchipped to the property where they will reside. Complete the Application Form to Keep Multiple Cats and pay the application fee. A Ranger will inspect the property and assess the application for approval.
Note: The City of Armadale introduced new Cat Local Laws on 5 February 2025. Owners with five (5) or more registered cats when these laws came into effect do not require a permit. However, they cannot replace any cat that dies or is permanently removed from the property.
