On the eve of the 2016 Census of Population and Housing, the City of Armadale is reminding residents of their obligation to participate in the nationwide survey – ensuring a true representation of the City and its people.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will launch the Census on 9 August which for the first time, will also be conducted online.
City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP said while the most basic function of the Census is to provide an accurate count of the Australian population, the data was used by every level of government to plan essential services needed in the community.
“Since the first national Census in 1911, the data has helped estimate Australia’s population, which is then used to distribute government funds and plan services for our community – housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals and the environment,” he said.
“It remains the most consistent and reliable dataset on the population and housing of Australians and as governments depend on the information, it is imperative that as many Armadale residents as possible complete the survey to ensure we are not under-represented.”
“The more accurate the figures, the greater the support we can anticipate from State and Federal government bodies.”
As this will be Australia’s first predominantly digital Census, Mayor Zelones said public access computers in the City’s libraries will be available for Census returns.
