Plastics have undoubtedly transformed our everyday lives. However, the large volume of plastic produced, and its ability to persist in the environment, has made it a problematic waste issue - and we can all act to be part of the solution
We can all act to reduce and avoid plastic waste:
- Remember to take reusable bottles and keep cups with you when you head out
- Select loose fruit and vegetables and avoid plastic packaged produce. Choosing exactly as much produce as you need means you also avoid food wastage at home
- Support bulk buy and refill businesses, and take your own containers to refill items such as flour, nuts and detergents
- Avoid buying new plastic toys by attending one of the City's toy swap events, or arrange your own with like-minded friends
- Avoid plastic food wrap. Store food in reusable containers with lids, or cover using beeswax wraps/recyclable aluminium foil
- If you see plastic litter in the environment, please pick it up and put it in the nearest bin. This action has a significant benefit to natural areas, the cleanliness of your community and the world's oceans: a 2024 CSIRO study estimates that every minute, a garbage truck sized load of plastic enters the ocean, in addition to approximately 11 million tonnes of plastic polluting the ocean floor.
