The City’s annual NAIDOC celebrations held at Bob Blackburn Reserve attracted a large crowd despite the threat of rainy conditions.
The event commenced with a Welcome to Country followed by the traditional Smoking Ceremony performed by Mungart Yongah.
The day’s activities included lots of stalls and entertainment with the traditional Aboriginal opening dance performed by Bridyia Mia Boys Group.
Mayor Ruth Butterfield said NAIDOC Week is important for everyone to come together and celebrate the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.
“It was a wonderful event for the whole family and great to see so many children enjoying the beginning of the school holidays with the small farm animal petting area, climbing tower and other free activities.
“Local Elders were honoured for their contributions to the community and leadership, as the day was very much about them, with this year’s theme For Our Elders.
“Today was an opportunity for everyone to recognise the role the Elders have played as leaders of our communities and for their knowledge and guidance regarding Aboriginal culture”, said Mayor Butterfield.
