The 2024 City of Armadale Writers Awards were announced at an awards ceremony on Friday 29 November 2024, hosted at Armadale Library.
The Armadale Writers Awards are a creative writing competition open to all adult writers living in Western Australia. This is the eighth year of the awards, which requires submissions to be original prose, not previously published in any format, and have a word count between 1000-3000 words.
This year saw a record number of entries, totalling 161. Of those, 26 entries were from City of Armadale residents, 110 from the Perth metropolitan area, and 25 from country WA.
Author Sasha Wasley was the MC for the event, which was attended by Cr Paul Hetherington (on behalf of Mayor Ruth Butterfield), the judges, award finalists and their families.
Mayor Ruth Butterfield said: The City of Armadale is proud to cultivate and encourage writing talent across the state, and we are thrilled that we continue to get such a high calibre of entries. Congratulations to all our finalists, and our winner and place getters. Thank you to everyone who entered and contributing to the thriving creating writing community in WA.”
The 2024 winners are:
1st Place: Jewel Oreskovich, ‘A Hunger of Bellas’, $1000 prize.
2nd Place: Philippa Freegard, ‘Karrgatup’, $750 prize.
3rd Place: Thomas Hickmott, ‘The Frogs’, $500 prize.
Finalists (in alphabetical order): Christine Tapper, Faridah Baharuddin, J.A, Lyndal Weightman, Melanie Hobbs, Penny Walker, and Rosanne Dingli.
Congratulations to all the finalists and placegetters. Winning stories will be available to read on the library website from Monday 2 December 2024.
Entries for the 2025 Armadale Writers Award are expected to open in September 2025.
