Roleystone Men’s Shed gets the green light

Roleystone residents are one step closer to a Community Hub after Council granted planning approval for a proposal Men’s Shed at Cross Park.

The proposal consists of a shed with kitchen/meeting room facilities, wood and metal working areas and a general workshop.

Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said Men’s Sheds were not a new concept - they have been around for years and are an updated version of the great Australian tradition of the shed in the back garden.

“They are now one of the most powerful tools in addressing health and wellbeing issues in men,” he said.

The Roleystone Men’s Shed will provide a place where members can meet, share or learn skills, converse, work on projects or just come and have a cuppa in a safe and friendly environment.

“Giving the green light to the proposal for the establishment of this multi-use, multigenerational activity area is a win-win outcome for everyone involved.

“The proposal had been on the table for a number of years, beginning when Council approved the commencement of a Master Planning process for four City reserves including Cross Park back in February 2012.

“Since the endorsement of the Master Plan in March 2013 the City’s officers and representatives from the Roleystone Men’s Community Shed have worked hard to progress the proposal to planning approval stage.”

Following the State Government reforms on the assessment/mitigation of bushfire hazard risk introduced in December 2015, removal of some vegetation and clearing of understorey species will be required to achieve an acceptable hazard rating.

However, Council has protected significant trees and requires the planting of new trees to offset any vegetation loss.

Cross Park will continue to provide a range of social and recreational opportunities for the wider community, including opportunities for youth, seniors and families to engage.
