Record numbers turn up to celebrate NAIDOC Week

The Bob Blackburn Oval was transformed into a cultural hive as a record number of people turned up to celebrate NAIDOC at the City’s annual Celebration Day gathering in Seville Grove on Tuesday.

The fine weather in the morning attracted over 3000 people who came from far and wide to celebrate the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP said that it was encouraging to see the event was well attended by both non-Indigenous and Indigenous people.

“NAIDOC is an important event on our national calendar and in our community. This year’s event was a celebration of the preservation and revitalisation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

“It is encouraging to see the growing numbers of attendees at our NAIDOC celebrations, especially from outside of the City.

“It shows a willingness to celebrate and learn more about our Indigenous community, and we expect the event will continue to grow in the coming years.”

This year’s NAIDOC theme, Our Language Matters which celebrates the preservation and revitalisation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages – the original languages of this nation.

“The ceremony was opened with a traditional smoking ceremony, followed by a traditional dance led by Mungart Yongah Aboriginal Dancers.

“Attendees were entertained by a range of well-known local indigenous musicians throughout the day including The Merindas, Hot Likwid, and Hip Hop artist K-P with DJ EDUB.”

A fashion show highlighted Brothaboy & Sista Girl fashions and Red Opium designs. More than 75 stall holders were at the event including local Aboriginal artists.
