The City of Armadale will again host one of the biggest bicycle fun rides of the year, when the Grand Fondo traverses through the Armadale hills and plains on Sunday 15 May.
The cycling tour is based on the Italian Grand Fondo cycling style, where cyclists and the local community have the opportunity to engage before and after the ride.
Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said participants range from recreational riders to established cyclists looking for a new challenge, and the undulating hills offer just that.
“Routes are designed in a manner where cyclists can see more of the area, and discover the hidden gems that are otherwise missed when travelling by car,” he said.
“Bike shops, charity and social groups associated with cycling events, bunch riders and special interest groups pertaining to cycling will be represented at the Event Village location in Jull Street Mall.
“Event Village will provide a focal point before and after the event and is an opportunity for all cyclists to network with each other, meet and greet friends and other cycling groups to find out what others are doing in the cycling community.
“As there are no road closures along the routes I encourage motorists to be aware of the increased presence of cyclists on our roads during the event,” he said.
There are three distances available for participants, the Byfields Piccolo Fondo 40km community ride through the plains of Armadale and the FILA Medio Fondo which covers 80km and is a middle distance ride with hill challenges.
The signature event is the Blackchrome Gran Fondo covering 100km and has made the name Heritage Drive synonymous with hill climbing for serious cyclists.
Participants leave from the Event Village located in the Jull Street Mall, Armadale City Centre, from 6.30am and are expected to return by 2pm.
