The City of Armadale has given the green light for a community garden to be established at Lot 2333, No 55 River Road, Kelmscott.
Council approved the project at its meeting last week after receiving a formal proposal from the Kelmscott Community Garden Inc (KCG Inc) in March.
The City and KCG undertook consultation with adjacent and nearby landowners and received submissions supporting the project.
The proposed community garden will be managed by the KCG Inc, along with significant community involvement, and will be used for vegetable and herb cultivation.
City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said community gardens are becoming increasingly popular, and these gardens can become hubs for community members to meet and develop friendships and links.
“Throughout the concept of the project the dedicated group from KCG has worked closely with the local community to involve them in the garden and encourage them to participate.
“Gardens such as this also provide opportunities for children to learn about environmental and sustainability matters as they watch the plants grow.
“In addition to gardening activities there is scope for workshops, busy bees and social gatherings attracting like-minded people to participate, and the people involved can supplement their food and reduce their grocery bills,” he said.
The community garden is subject to a number of conditions, and a prepared Land Management Plan will assist in increasing the success and outline the responsibilities of the Kelmscott Community Garden Inc in relation to the project.
