The City of Armadale’s Champion Centre hosted it’s fourth Welcome Baby to Country, on Friday 25 October 2024.
This traditional ceremony included an Aboriginal naming and smoking ceremony, for babies aged 0-2 years old. These ceremonies provide a positive cultural start to life, helping connect young families to Aboriginal culture in a modern setting. Members of the Middar Yorgas (Grandmothers/Aunties) Dance Group performed an Aboriginal dance as part of the ceremony and celebration.
The event saw 46 babies and their families take part.
The Champion Centre’s Welcome Baby to Country was an initiative driven by local Elder Vivenne Hansen, (Aunty Viv), and her goal to provide a space and host cultural connection for young families and continue traditional practices. The event is supported by the Early Years Partnership.
A multitude of service providers attended to provide free support and information for participants.
Mayor Ruth Butterfield said: “Welcome Baby to Country is a powerful way to welcome the newest members of our community, as we honour their birth and their connection to the land.
“After the success of our inaugural Welcome Baby to Country in June 2023, we are proud to continue this tradition and facilitate a space where families can come together and celebrate these new births.”
The Champion Centre plans to host two Welcome Baby to Country events in 2025. You can stay up to date with events and updates on their Facebook page.
